The featured flower is Yarrow, native to New York and tied to the myth of Chiron, the wounded healer. Traditionally used to cleanse blood and spirit, Yarrow often grows in overlooked or damaged places: sidewalk cracks, rubble, disturbed soil. It is known to appear where healing is most needed.
The text was inspired by the musician Nick Cave on The Late Show with Stephen Colbert in 2024. A fan wrote to him about feeling empty and cynical, afraid of passing that despair on to his young son.
Cave responded:
“Much of my early life was spent holding the world and the people in it in contempt. It took a devastation to understand the idea of mortal value, and… to find hope. Unlike cynicism, hopefulness is hard-earned. It makes demands upon us and can often feel like the most indefensible and lonely place on Earth. Hopefulness is not a neutral position either. It is adversarial. It is the warrior emotion that can lay waste to cynicism. Each redemptive or loving act, as small as you like, keeps the devil down in the hole.”
